Math Media Review!

December13

Our math test on Chapters 5-6 will be on tomorrow.  A review sheet came home yesterday as an optional way to help your child study.  Listed below are all of the videos that went with this chapter in a playlist.  There are 7 videos and they will play one right after the other.  A great way to study would be to re-watch the videos and practice the problems one more time. Can you create your own problems that are similar and teach someone in your family how to solve them?

Are you ready to divide?!

December1

Hi Seussville Citizens!  For tonight’s homework, please view the video below:

After you’ve watched it, please post a comment on this blog post! (There are specific directions about this within the video). Your family can help you find where to click. I can’t wait to explore division with you next week!

Your Mathematical Multiplication Mission…

November21

Are you ready to get fancy again with homework? I thought it would be fun to have your math homework on the blog tonight.  Check out the video below and the record your thoughts on your record sheet that is in your take home folder.  Pssst: don’t forget to show your parents that they even have homework too. 🙂  Have them fill out the bottom of the record sheet with how they felt about this kind of assignment.  This video will help us tremendously with tomorrow’s lesson so please make sure to watch the video in its entirety.  If you would like to comment below too please feel free.

Bar Model Instructional Videos!

November15

The Chapter 4 Test on Bar Models will be at the end of the week.  In order to help your child at home, I wanted to provide you with these 3 instructional videos that explain each bar model we have studied.  Please use these as a review and or as a way to support your child at home.  The goal of 2nd grade is to introduce your child to this type of problem solving so they will be better equipped to solve more difficult problems.  We will continue to use bar models throughout the rest of the school year so your child can feel more confident in this math tool!

How Did Your Family Use Math Tonight?

November2

I have been participating in a breakfast club book study with members of the DGS Staff.  We have been reading and discussing Guided Math by: Laney Sammons.  One of the sections of this books talks about math stretches.  Just like athletes stretch and work out in order to get ready for games, we as mathematicians need to do the same thing.

I thought it would be fun to participate in one of the stretches to show students the connection between math and the real world.  For homework tonight, please have your child click on the blue link below.  This will take you to a Padlet that Mrs. Ellis has created.  Padlet is a website that is like an online cork board.  This particular Padlet, is all about how your family used math at home.  Your child has participated in several Padlets here at school and can teach you how to use it and add items too it.  This will be an excellent opportunity for them to show you what they have learned about using this online tool and get the chance to be a teacher. 🙂 Have them create a box and then type how you used math at home.  Feel free to even add a picture and be as creative as possible.  Can they follow the rules of writing and be a good digital citizen too?

I can’t wait to see what you and your family come up with tonight!

Bar Models Here We Come!

October18

This week we have started learning about Bar Models!  What can your child tell you about their learning so far? Please check out the video below tonight with your family.  After the video, leave a comment on our blog for homework about what you learned or something that was helpful.

Subtraction Across Zeros Trick!

October12

Your child brought home some math practice tonight to reinforce skills being taught in the classroom.  In order to help support your child at home, please watch this short video.  This will demonstrate for you how this skills is being taught so you can further help your child.

2nd Grade Math Rubrics!

September12

Tonight your child will be bringing home their Chapter 1 Math test!  Attached will be a rubric that I wanted to make sure I explained to you.  I made a video (see blue link below) explaining each of the components to better help you understand your child’s score and what each section means.  Please know that if the box labeled “as a result of your child’s score…” is not filled out, this is not a bad thing.  I explain this further in the video too.   Since this was our first test, I only filled this out if your child needs some extra support.  Please know you can always practice math at home regardless if I mark anything in this box.

I hope this video helps you and your child talk about their scores.

Math Chapter Test Rubrics

(This video is an educreations made video.  If you have an iPad it will play by opening up the free app, educreations.  You can watch it on any device that uses adobe flash player.  Let me know if you are having trouble viewing and I can try to troubleshoot with you.)

What time is it?!

March14

Time! Time! Time! Who has the time?! Can you guess what our next math chapter will be about?!  You guessed it: TIME!  We will be exploring how to tell time to the minute and hour, how to determine AM or PM, reading/writing time and determining how much time has passed (elapsed time).

In order to get our brains thinking about time, for homework tonight please watch the video below. Once you have watched it, please write TWO complete sentences about what you learned/observed/noticed/realized in the comment section. I can’t wait to see all that you were able to learn and look forward to learning even more as we explore this chapter.

Fractions Are Alright!

March2

“Fractions, fractions….they’re parts of a whole….”

Are you ready to jam out fraction style?!  Please watch the following video. Afterwards please post a comment for homework that shares something you learned. Can you include detail and follow the rules of writing too?!
